Robbins|Reed: Mustang Movers and Shakers

RobbinsReedNews

The Fall issue of Cal Poly’s Construction Management Department’s magazine, Construction Innovator, features none other than Robbins|Reed and we’re stoked about it.

The profile shares how our very own Construction Management Mustangs Grant Robbins (’94) and Shawn Reed (’92) have made a practice of hiring talented Cal Poly alums. Founded in 2007, our San Luis Obispo contracting and real estate development firm has encouraged alumni hiring alumni for over a decade. The feature also recognized Robbins|Reed for what we are – the premier builders on California’s Central Coast.

Both Robbins and Reed were given shout-outs for their contributions in our community. Robbins for his involvement with the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce, and Reed for his outstanding leadership of Habitat for Humanity. Not to mention, he’s a board member of the Home Builders Association of the Central Coast.

Beyond founding partners Robbins and Reed, our capable team is made up of numerous Cal Poly graduates, including:

  • Partner Aaryn Abbot (‘06)
  • Vice President Ryan Adams (’06)
  • Director of Custom Homes Stephen Griggs (’00)
  • Project Manager Gil Bastidas (’12)
  • Construction Manager Scott Merson (‘05)
  • Accounting Administrator Matt Reddell (’11)
  • Project Engineer Jeff Hadley (‘16)

Did you know Robbins|Reed supports the Cal Poly Women in Construction club? In fact – our amazing intern Sarah De Los Reyes serves as a club officer. We’re lucky to count on her.

Construction Management Lecturer Stacy Kolegraff founded the Cal Poly Women in Construction club in February of this year. Kolegraff shares that the organization is dedicated to empowering women through mentorship, networking, youth outreach, and industry support, including scholarships. The club is open to all Cal Poly students interested in construction.

That’s a wrap on our latest local headlines. Know that our commitment to hiring Cal Poly graduates and supporting women in construction is important to every one of us.

Hire the Right Team

When requesting referrals from friends, family and colleagues – know what questions to ask:
  • Were you happy with the work?
  • Did the project go as expected?
  • How would you rate their communications skills?
  • How long have they been doing business in the area?
  • Was the individual trustworthy and professional to work with?

Beyond verifying that your General Contractor is licensed with the state, you’ll want to determine if the General Contractor has a proven record. At Robbins|Reed, we do. Choosing a team who has successfully completed projects similar to yours can be beneficial.

Robbins|Reed Builders: 3 Commercial Construction Trends

RobbinsReedNews

Comercial Construction Trends SLO

Robbins|Reed Builders is a top commercial building company in San Luis Obispo. Today we’re sharing the latest in commercial construction trends from retrofitting historical buildings to green construction and mixed-use commercial projects.

1. Retrofitting Historical Buildings

Retrofitting an existing building uses far fewer resources than a brand new commercial build. This trend presents owners with a valuable opportunity to upgrade the energy performance of a commercial building in the long-term. Energy efficient retrofits not only reduce operational costs (especially in historical buildings) but can help entice tenants too. Design wise, it’s possible to keep the historical integrity of the building while updating it with modern amenities. The aesthetic factor is particularly important in communities recognized for their historic value. At Robbins|Reed, our team has extensive experience with successful retrofitting projects.

Robbins|Reed Retrofitting Projects:
2. Green Construction

New technology from solar panels to recycled building materials and energy efficient home appliances are changing the way we think about how buildings and communities are planned, built, maintained, and operated. Robbins|Reed clients are increasingly concerned with going green – and for good reason. Sustainable and green efforts appeal to owners since improved energy efficiency can save on costs and attract renters. Being LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified can save clients valuable resources while being environmentally responsible. LEED certified buildings are more resource efficient because they use less water and energy on top of reducing emissions from greenhouse gas. LEED works for all buildings, from custom homes to corporate headquarters, at all phases of development. Projects pursuing LEED certification earn points across several areas that address sustainability issues. Based on the number of points achieved, a project then receives one of four LEED rating levels: Certified, Silver, Gold, or Platinum. The green commercial construction trend has become so popular that LEED is the most widely used third-party verification for green buildings, with over 2.2 million square feet being certified every day.

3. Mixed-use Commercial Buildings

Mixed-use commercial buildings are trending in the commercial construction industry. These projects are typically found in a prime location and appeal to a broad marketplace. Mixed-use commercial buildings often feature a combination of retail/restaurants, office space, and residential living in one thoughtfully designed building. These projects have absolute curb appeal. Imagine walking from your residence to shopping before dinner and drinks – all without getting in your car. Diversification of uses in mixed-use facilities also makes them more efficient. Mixed-use commercial buildings are able to achieve a higher density from a residential and commercial retail standpoint by vertically stacking uses. A solid example of our mixed-use commercial construction work is The MIX @ Monterey. Built in 2011, The Mix is a four-story environmentally designed building dedicated to both commercial offices and loft apartments. The 1,600 square foot project was the very first mixed-use infill project in San Luis Obispo, CA.

Robbins|Reed was built to build. Our San Luis Obispo commercial construction team frames creative solutions to complex construction challenges by pushing the boundaries of creative execution. Our passionate commitment to innovation makes us better builders. Contact us today – (805) 316-5046.

Our Robbins|Reed Builders team is currently constructing four unique floor plans to meet a variety of needs. Each one is named in honor of a popular local wine grape.

Plan A—Syrah
  • 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom
  • Spacious living room
  • Walk-in closet in master bedroom
Plan B—Merlot
  • 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom
  • Complete with a large kitchen area and serving counter
Plan C—Chardonnay
